Blogging – Purpose, Passion or Pleasure

Dear Friends and Family,

It has been quite some time since I last posted to this blog – almost two months.  Believe it or not, my intention has been to write here at least once a week – to describe the adventure of starting a new ministry.  It’s ironic that during one of the most dynamic times of God speaking to me, and moving our ministry, I have not been able to put it to paper.

I don’t know exactly why I have not had a passion to write.  Perhaps it’s because so much of God’s revelation has been personal and “in process”.  Maybe it’s because things are changing so much, that I don’t know what I will put down that will not be different the next day.  One thing is certain, running a ministry requires a discipline I never had to muster in the corporate world.  President, Treasurer, Disciple-maker, Teacher, Fundraiser – there are times it has just been hard to fit in Chronicler (is that a word?)

I know, it sounds like a bunch of excuses from someone that just can’t get it done.  I sit here tempted to go back and erase it all.  But I need to practice not worrying about … (you fill in the blank).  BTW:  Did you know that Jesus commanded us, “Do not worry”?  It was not an offer.  It did not come with a RSVP.  It was a commandment.  It’s funny; most people respond to that command with, “But how will I take care of my family?” or, “How will I plan for the future?”.  It’s as if “caring for” and “planning for” require worry.  I know that’s not what they mean, but it’s a betrayal of what’s in so many of our hearts – we worry, and we need to excuse it somehow.  Ironically, it’s easier to care and plan when I’m not worrying.  But I digress.

Communication should have a purpose.  My investment in talking would not win me the Baldwin award for quality, effectiveness or productivity.  I am wasteful at times; destructive at others.  At least when you write, you can take it back before it gets out.  Thank God for writing.  I should do more of it.  I encourage all of you to take up journaling.  It really is the blessing they proclaim.

So, what can I say today (in a post that seems to be turning cheeky)?  You know, I find pleasure in writing.  I really do; no sarcasm intended.  When the Holy Spirit is guiding my “pen”, I just enjoy His presence; and I get excited about what He is saying – the impact it might have on someone.  It’s much the same as talking when you know the Holy Spirit is using you to minister to someone.  You feel His fruit flowing out of you.

Why am I writing today?  Well, it just seemed time to start back.  I guess these ramblings may be more for my benefit than anyone else.  Of course, I may be the only one that’s reading anyway.  People get tired of waiting.  Who can blame them?

I am going to make one significant change to my blogging discipline – I am going to drop the discipline.  I am convicted (actually in this moment) to only write when the Holy Spirit leads me.  I have a lot of ideas about what to write.  We will leave that to Him, as well.

As I close, I feel the need to ask those of you that are interested to let me know.  It’s not that I need the encouragement (though it’s a great perk), but I wonder if this is an effective avenue for communication.  As Pink Floyd once said, “Is there anybody out there?”  If so, please be encouraged to go where the Spirit leads.  It’s the best way to find adventure.

Awed by His love,

Rob

P.S.  The picture is not themed to the posting (that would be a miracle); I just liked it.
