Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
To the beloved, whom I love in truth: I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers; just as you walk in the truth.
I have learned (from one who has discipled me) that giving away books can be one of the best ways to encourage, edify and equip someone. I am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to meet a spiritual need with one of my favorite books. I encourage you to do the same.
Each year, God introduces me to one or two books that are particularly encouraging and edifying. This year, I have been exceedingly blessed. Here are a few recommendations for your reading pleasure:
- The Power of His Resurrection; T. Austin Sparks – Sparks uses the lives of Elijah and Elisha to bring forth the truths of resurrection living. All of his works are available free online.
- Letters of a Modern Mystic; Frank C. Laubach – Much like Practicing the Presence of God (by Brother Lawrence), this little book give instruction in the way of conscious moment-by-moment communion with God.
- The Latent Power of the Soul; Watchman Nee – A timely warning against the use of soul power in the work of ministry.
- Abide in Christ; Andrew Murray – This book, by my favorite author, has encouraged me greatly in the reality and possibility of truly abiding – even continually – with the source of life, love and power.
- The Power of the Spirit; William Law – Written in the 1700’s, Andrew Murray had this book republished in 1896 because, “In all my reading I have never found anyone who has so helped me in understanding the Scripture truth of the work of the Holy Spirit.”
There is something of a theme here: Living solely from the power of our life in Christ. In light of that, let me share a closing thought.
I am concerned with a trend in the church. It seems to me that many are talking and acting like “taking authority” is a good thing; like a branch can become a vine of its own volition. This is not supported in Scripture. Authority is given, and must be received; but, taking it from God will lead to disaster (see Matthew 7:21-23). Please be careful.
Prayer Requests
- Beth’s sister, Melissa, passed on to be with the Lord. She is happy, and the One Who paid the price for her redemption is well pleased; but those of us that remain are grieving. Please pray that God would fill the void.
- Pray for your brothers and sisters that are enduring persecution – as if chained with them.
- Please pray for wisdom and the resources we need for our next book; and the accompanying virtual classroom experiment.
- Pray for Beth and me as we seek the Lord’s desires for the next season of our adventure together.
