Love as He Loved Me

I have struggled to love most of my life. It’s not because I haven’t been loved. In fact, I have been loved by some of the most loving people God created; and by God Himself. The problem, of course, is me. Thankfully, God has been patient and persistent in this matter. This short article is about a recent example.

This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12

“…as I have loved…” makes it clear that we are to love one another sacrificially. Jesus’ love is best described as sacrificial. I’ve known and taught this for many years now. This answers the “how am I to love?” question.

More recently, God decided to put an emphasis on the question of, “Who am I to love?” Here’s what I heard Him say:

Jesus not only loved sacrificially; He loved the antithesis of Who He is. Remember who/what you were and be sure to love those people.

In other words, don’t put conditions on who you will love. Honestly, I didn’t think I was; but I trust Him to know me better than I know myself. Perhaps it is a matter of degree: Loving those easier to love more than others.

I suspect there are some opportunities on the horizon. If we are to be houses who stand in the storms as refuge, encouragement, and wisdom for those who come knocking, we best not expect to be selective of those God sends our way.

Pray for me.

And God bless you with His love for one another.

Have a strong day in the Lord,

Rob
