Why Would God Bless America?

It’s that time of year again, when churches display and people sing, “God Bless America.” Honestly, I don’t understand why we think He would. Are we naïve or just willfully blind to the facts?

  1. America is the world leader in the production and consumption of child pornography – the product of the child sex slave trade. Think about that! While celebrating our independence, we are leading the world in the trafficking, enslavement, and sexual abuse of more than 3 million children.

    Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. Mark 9:42

  2. America has murdered more than 75 million unborn babies since the passage of Roe v. Wade. 75 million people will not be enjoying fireworks and family gatherings because somewhere close to 150 million people – the father and mother of each one – were deceived into thinking their children were expendable. Inexplicably, approximately half of those babies were aborted by persons claiming to be Christians.

    But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
    And your sins have hidden His face from you,
    So that He will not hear.
    For your hands are defiled with blood,
    And your fingers with iniquity;
    Your lips have spoken lies,
    Your tongue has muttered perversity. Isaiah 59:2-3

Why has this happened to the nation God created to serve and evangelize the world? There may be many reasons (most are simply excuses), but two obvious ones stand out:

  1. The American Dream has become the worship of Mammon (Matthew 6:24). The love of money has become the root of all our evils (1Timothy 6:10).
  2. The church – particularly its leaders – has stood by conveniently ignoring America’s fall into darkness. Like the churches in Germany before the rise of Naziism, we have failed God and the world by our silence.
  3. Compromise is easier than confrontation. We have come to believe that politely getting along is more God’s style than engaging evil with righteous indignation.

One can certainly disagree with this assessment, and there are certainly exceptions to the rule, but only the most willfully blind and spiritually ignorant will fail to see and understand the evidence of our decline. Why would God bless the most Babylonian nation in the world (see Revelation 18 for the stark similarities).

We seriously need to stop asking God for blessings, as if we deserve them, and start asking for His mercy. Though we do not deserve that either, He has promised to forgive and deliver those who fear Him and come to Him with a broken and contrite heart (Psalm 34).

Christians who truly care for America will be more likely heard and helped by God in praying, “God have mercy on us, for we have sinned. Beyond comprehension, in either commission, omission, or apathy, we have sinned against you and the most innocent of our kind. Could there be a sin more grievous to your heart than the deliberate injury of a child? Forgive us and deliver us from our transgressions.”

Christians who truly care for children will add, “Judge America for what she has become. Call, draw, and lead us out of her iniquity; and out of our complacency. Use us, by Your Spirit and Your truth, to set the children free.”

God’s judgment is eternal (Hebrews 6:2) – it has no beginning or end. In other words, God has been, is, and will be judging America and the church that abides here. More sobering for the Christian – For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God (1Peter 4:17a).

God bless you with conviction, repentance, forgiveness, and deliverance.

Humbly yours and forever His,

Rob
